The Condesito

Diving from boat – easy level.
The Condesito was a forty meters cargo ship, sunk beginning of the 70’s.
The wreck is located at the southern point of the island, close to the shore but the access is nearly impossible without a boat. Three years after its wreck was built the lighthouse of Punta Resca.

In winter 2008, weakened by rust and bad weather, the wreck broke down, showing its machinery. Our boat pilot drops the anchor on the 20 meters depth bottom. Another diving boat comes toward us, without hesitation we roll back in the ocean and start the descent…

The stern of the Condesito is well preserved. The holds are as empty in goods as in sea life. Actually the sides of the ship offer shelter to many fishes, like large trumpet fishes, or seabreams of many kinds. The propeller is located at the maximum depth of 20m and is almost buried. We dive along the starboard side in the direction of the bow in shallower water.

It lies at only few metres from the stern of the boat and at 8 meters depth.
We can find there some small shellfish, fire worms …
Less well preserved than the stern, it tends to flatten.

The Condesito carried cement, we can find piles of bags, petrified by salt water between the stern and the bow of the wreck. There are some as well in the holds.
Marine life blooms in this rectangular landscape, we can see many species, like arrow crabs or even beautiful Berried anemones.

The ship was beached on the shore, what helped a lot the rescue and the recovery of the load. When reversing to try to free the boat from the rocks, the hull broke in 3 parts. The remains of the bridge lays nowadays between the shore and the wreck…

The wreck is extremely unstable, it is strongly advised not to enter it. When the swell crushes on the shore, the shock wave is so strong that it is the whole stern of the ship which moves under water. The bad weather and rust seriously damaged the Condesito. Do not enter.

Here is a video I shoot in April 2009, it is the broken body of the ship:

The safety stops give us a chance to fly over the whole wreck, but also to enjoy the astonishing formations of volcanic rock which surround it. On both sides, they form walls, cut in basalt. There is few fixed life on the rock, in spite of the systematic eradication of the sea urchins diadema. As the wreck is located very close to the shore, the dive site is surrounded by fisherman lines, in great number on weekends.

We can meet some small school of barracudas in shallow water. Young (about fifty centimetres), they benefit from the protection offered by this U-shaped rock bar, pointed towards the open ocean.
